Cleansing 101: Single vs Double Cleanse — which one should you do?

Cleansing 101: Single vs Double Cleanse — which one should you do?

Why cleansing matters (and what “cleanse” really means)

Cleansing is step one — the reset. It removes makeup, SPF, sebum, pollution and everyday grime so your serums and moisturisers can actually get to work. If your skin isn’t clean, active ingredients can’t absorb properly and you’re more likely to get congestion and dullness over time.

Single cleanse vs double cleanse — quick comparison

Single cleanse

A single wash with a gentle water-based cleanser. Great for mornings or nights when you haven’t worn makeup or heavy sunscreen.

Double cleanse

Two steps: an oil- or balm-based cleanser first, followed by a water-based cleanser. This is the go-to method for removing makeup, sunscreen and daily impurities more thoroughly while still protecting the skin barrier.

Why choose double cleansing? (short and practical)

  • Removes stubborn SPF & makeup that water cleansers can leave behind.

  • Reduces blocked pores and congestion when done correctly.

  • Improves absorption of the products you apply afterwards (toners, serums, moisturisers).

  • Gentler overall — the oil step dissolves surface oils, so the second cleanse doesn’t need to be overly stripping.

How to double cleanse — simple, step-by-step

Follow this routine (times are guides — treat them as gentle recommendations):

Dry skin — oil step (60–90 seconds)

  • Pump 1–2 pumps of an oil or balm onto dry hands. Massage into dry skin (including eyelids) with gentle circular motions. Focus 60–90 seconds on melting makeup and SPF — don’t rush this step.

Emulsify & rinse (10–20 seconds)

  • Add a little water, massage until the oil milky-emulsifies, then rinse thoroughly.

Wet skin — water cleanser (30–45 seconds)

  • Dispense a small amount of a gentle foaming or cream cleanser, lather with water and massage across the face for about 30–45 seconds. Rinse completely.

Pat dry & continue

  • Gently pat skin dry and continue with toner → serum → moisturiser → SPF (in the morning).
